To adjust the properties of films, it is possible to create blends (mixtures). However, this works only to a limited extent and typically only when the materials have a certain affinity for each other. Often, it's better to produce multilayer films.
For polymers with low affinity, adhesion promoters come into play to enable bonding between incompatible films. This allows the creation of PE/PE films from polyamide and polyethylene, combining the good gas barrier properties of polyamide with the excellent water vapor barrier properties of polyethylene.
